How I Turned a College Assignment into a Local Hip Hop Brand

When I was in college studying Advertising and Marketing Communications, we were given an assignment to create and manage a business social media page. The objective was simple: develop a brand, grow an audience, and apply the marketing principles we were learning in class.

Many students spent time deciding what kind of business they wanted to create. While everyone else was still brainstorming ideas, I was already designing a logo and building a brand. Having always been passionate about music, particularly the local hip hop scene, I decided to launch a social media platform called Windsor Rap.

What began as a school project quickly turned into something much bigger.

Finding an Untapped Market

At the time, Windsor had a growing hip hop community, but there wasn't a dedicated platform focused solely on promoting local artists, music releases, events, and culture. I saw an opportunity to create a central hub where artists could gain exposure and fans could stay informed about what was happening in the local scene.

Rather than approaching Windsor Rap as just another Facebook page, I treated it like a real brand. I developed a recognizable visual identity, created consistent content, and focused on providing value to the community instead of simply seeking followers.

Growing The Brand Organically

One of the aspects I am most proud of is that Windsor Rap grew entirely through organic marketing.

I spent no money on advertising.

There were no boosted posts, paid campaigns, or sponsored promotions. Everything was built through content, consistency, and community engagement.

Every day I created new posts featuring local artists, music videos, upcoming shows, and industry-related content. The goal was to make Windsor Rap the first place local rappers and fans would think of when they wanted to stay connected with the scene.

As the page continued to grow, engagement increased significantly. Local artists began sharing our content, tagging the page in posts, and interacting with the community. Soon, Windsor Rap had become more than a class project; it had become a recognized platform within the local music culture.

Building Relationships Through Content

One of the biggest lessons I learned was that social media marketing is really about building relationships.

People do not engage with brands simply because they exist. They engage because the content provides value, entertainment, or a sense of community.

By consistently highlighting local talent and celebrating artist achievements, Windsor Rap became something artists genuinely wanted to be part of. Every feature, repost, and announcement helped strengthen connections within the local music scene.

The more attention we gave to artists, the more support the page received in return. This created a positive cycle of engagement that helped the brand continue growing organically.

Consistency Creates Results

If there was one lesson that stood out above all others, it was the importance of consistency.

Running a social media page is not about producing one great post and hoping for success. It requires showing up every day, creating fresh content, and continuously engaging with your audience.

There were days when coming up with ideas was challenging, but I learned that consistency builds momentum. Every post contributed to the overall growth of the brand, and over time the audience began to expect regular updates.

That consistency helped establish credibility and trust with followers. People knew they could rely on Windsor Rap as a consistent source of information about local hip hop culture.

Applying Classroom Knowledge in the Real World

The Windsor Rap project gave me an opportunity to apply marketing concepts in a real-world environment.

I learned how to:

  • Create and position a brand
  • Develop a recognizable visual identity
  • Build an audience organically
  • Create engaging content consistently
  • Increase social media engagement
  • Understand audience behavior
  • Grow a community around a shared interest

More importantly, I learned that successful marketing is not always about having a large budget. Creativity, persistence, and authenticity can often achieve remarkable results on their own.

Looking Back

Looking back, Windsor Rap was one of the most valuable projects I completed during college. It transformed theoretical marketing concepts into practical experience and showed me firsthand how brands are built through consistent effort and meaningful engagement.

What started as a simple classroom assignment evolved into a thriving local media platform that connected artists, promoted music, and strengthened a community.

Most importantly, it taught me a lesson that still applies to every brand I build today:

People don't follow brands because they advertise. They follow brands because those brands create value, earn trust, and consistently show up for their audience.
